E-mail: optic@mt-vernon.com-Thursday.July 29, 2010

Best boss

The Best Boss in Franklin County in 2010, according to the
readers of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald is Mike Jordan.
That distinction is quite remarkable when you claim approximately
11,000 employees, of which approximately 300
are based in Franklin County.
"It is easy to be a good boss when you have such great
people working for you," Mr. Jordan said. "When you have
as many long term employees as we have, everything works
smoothly."
Mr. Jordan graduated from Mount Vernon High School in
1965. He earned his bachelors in business administration from
East Texas State University in 1970. He was in the office equipment
business in the Dallas area until 1979 when he returned
to Mount Vernon to help with the family business.
His parents, Joe and Jean Jordan, began Jordan Health Services
in 1975 as part of a pilot program for the State of Texas
to try and keep people out of .
nursing homes. "The economy
was bad in 1975. People needed
jobs, and others needed care,"
Mr. Jordan said. At that time,
the company provided service
to five counties.
Mr. Jordan bought Mission
Manor Nursing Horne from his
parents in 1979. They originally
opened the facility in 1969.
In 2000, Mr. Jordan and his
siblings, Dale and Mickey, purchased
the Jordan Health Services
from their parents. Mike Jordan
Jordan became the sole owner
of the business in 2005, and doubled the size of the company
in April 2006 with the purchase of Chartwell Horne Health.
Today, Jordan Health Services provides care from Beaumont
up into Oklahoma and from Fort Worth and Waco to all over
East Texas. As well as providing home health care, the company
operates four nursing homes and four assisted living centers.
Mr. Jordan and his wife, Janet, have been married for 39
years. They have two children. Josh and his wife, Kayce, live in
Mount Vernon with their children Emerson and Kate. Julianne
and her husband, Jason Evans, live in the Dallas area with their
children Gillis and Jordan.
In his spare time, Mr. Jordan likes to shoot skeet and hunt
and fish, but he is finding that much of that time is now being
spent with his grandchildren.
Fifteen team members were involved in the fundraiser, but a few non-team members participated in the walk the night of the relay as well. They had been looking for several months before deciding on this space. The new location allows all the staff to be in one location, so the space is better utilized.

Jordan Health Services Named to 2009 HomeCare Elite as a Top Home Health Care Provider

Mount Vernon, Texas, October 21, 2009 — Jordan Health Services today announced that it has been named to the 2009 HomeCare Elite™, a compilation of the top-performing home health agencies in the United States. This annual review identifies the top 25 percent of agencies and further highlights the top 100 and top 500 agencies overall. Winners are ranked by an analysis of performance measures in quality outcomes, quality improvement, and financial performance.

“The 2009 HomeCare Elite winners demonstrate a commitment to providing their patients with the best possible care while performing at the highest level,” said Nancy Buller, senior director of marketing communications at OCS HomeCare. "We congratulate Jordan on being one of the top home care agencies in the country."

Jordan’s Roy Serpa, CEO, credits a dedicated team of clinical and non-clinical employees and a focus on quality service delivery with the company’s ability to rank as one of the HomeCare Elite. He said, Jordan has been providing home care services in Texas for over 34 years. We have never been more proud of our home care team. We are especially proud that many of our locations have been named to the HomeCare Elite listing in both 2008 & 2009.”

“DecisionHealth would like to congratulate the top HomeCare Elite agencies that achieved excellent clinical and financial outcomes by providing quality care to their patients,” adds Marci Heydt, executive editor of DecisionHealth’s Home Health Line.

The 2009 HomeCare Elite is the only performance recognition of its kind in the home health industry. The 2009 HomeCare Elite is brought to the industry by OCS HomeCare, the leading provider of homecare information, and DecisionHealth, publisher of homecare’s most respected independent newsletter Home Health Line. The data used for this analysis was compiled from publicly available information. Hartman

Three years ago Jordan Health Services donated funds for the replacement of 13 automated external defibrillators (AEDs). AEDs are used by police officers and fire & rescue personnel if they happen upon an emergency where a person’s heart may have stopped. These AEDs are particularly valuable in rural communities where an ambulance may take longer to reach the patient and render aid. When the sheriff’s department received the notice that they had to replace the units carried in the Mount Vernon and Franklin County law enforcement patrol vehicles, Chief Deputy, Richard Alexander contacted JHS. JHS supports the community and is always willing to donate where there is a need, so they were excited to hear about this opportunity. In March 2009, Chief Deputy Richard Alexander and Sheriff Paul Fletcher accepted a check for $500 from JHS representatives Dana Pine and Melanie Matkin for the battery cost.

This is the first grant of its kind awarded in Franklin County. Judy Mabry, Assistant Human Resources Director for Jordan Health Services, has been working with the National Education Alliance and Rue Education on gaining approval for this program for some time.

According to Ms. Mabry, “Rue provides these nurses with a convenient online training environment that makes it easier on their lifestyles. It’s a great opportunity for each LVN!”

Out of the 38 candidates for this program, 10 LVNs were chosen based on job performance and seniority with Jordan. These participants will complete an 18-24 month program involving online courses, nursing classes, and clinical practicum. Once each LVN has completed the RN training, they will go on to take the RN State Board examination.

Jordan is excited about the possibilities this plan will provide to its LVNs who are looking to expand their education. It will allow Jordan to develop its existing nursing staff and put us on the road to becoming a more successful company.

Jordan Health Services recognizes it plays a role in protecting our environment. Below are a few actions our team has undertaken to do our part:

Use of electronic medical records for patients receiving Home Health Services thus decreasing the use of paper products

Use of handheld computers, called PDAs (personal digital assistants) for both documentation of daily activities and internal communication, whenever possible

Continued decrease in the use of desktop computers which can create a challenge at the time of replacement

Use of technology in day-to-day business operations in an effort to decrease the use of paper:

On-line employment applications

On-line patient referrals

Electronic posting of internal policies & procedures

Electronic posting of company data such as financial statements, internal requests, human resource documents, etc.

Electronic storage of critical company records, whenever allowed by regulation

As electronic equipment is upgraded, Jordan searches for the most cost-effective, power-efficient products to reduce electricity consumption

Conservative use of electricity during non-business hours

Whenever feasible, Jordan donates used electronic equipment to the local community, such as schools, rather than discarding in local landfills

Computer based training for clinical and non-clinical team members decreases the need for large amounts of document reproduction

Purchase of recycled paper products such as copy paper

Proper planning when scheduling in-home visits to ensure minimal miles driven, thus conserving the use of gasoline

Leasing of company-vehicles that meet or exceed 30 miles per gallon of gasoline

Using energy-saving settings on computer equipment, printers, electronic devices, and powering down these items during non-business hours

Use of computer technology to share and review internal documents onscreen versus printing documents

Saving files in a PDF format to eliminate blank pages in documents that must be printed

Use of technology to submit bills to payers versus the submission & storage of paper bills, when possible

Payment of vendor invoices electronically, when possible

Re-use of shipping boxes and packing materials

Use of telecommuting for employees, when possible, to decrease the need for more office space and associated utilities

Jordan Health Services attendant Willie Mae Williams of San Augustine knew that she had to be at a mandatory meeting in Jasper on Thursday morning. She had no idea that she was to be the subject of the meeting, all that she was worried about was who was going to take care of her patients while she was in Jasper.

Williams' concern for the people that she cares for was just one of the reasons that she was honored with the 2008 Briscoe Award on Thursday in Jasper. Jordan Health Services Chief Executive Officer Roy M. Serpa presented the award to Williams, along with a handy little check just in time for Christmas.

The Briscoe Award was named for Yvonne Briscoe, an attendant who rode her bicycle on a four mile round trip, everyday, in every kind of weather to care for her patients. Briscoe was recognized for her efforts in 2006, and the award was named after her.

Willie Mae Williams has been with Jordan since 1998, and although she has no transportation, she walks 6 miles round trip everyday to care for two patients, and just like the award's namesake, Williams makes that walk in every kind of weather.
