By KELLY GOOCH
Staff Writer

While some residents are busy this week returning gifts, Julie Lindsey is buying gifts to help others ring in the New Year with flare and fireworks.

The Tyler resident, who works as a manager with Jordan Health Services, set out with co-worker Allison Taucher on Tuesday to buy fireworks to be put inside goodie bags for nurses, social workers and others she works with so they feel appreciated. The bags will contain items that are fun and harmless such as sparklers and little smoke bombs, Ms. Lindsey said.

“It’s just something that we’ve always done, and it’s a little treat people enjoy receiving,” she said after buying fireworks at Pappy’s Fireworks on Spur 248. “It just kind of brightens their day.”

Ms. Lindsey and Ms. Taucher are just some of the residents who will purchase fireworks for the upcoming New Year holiday, sales that were threatened by the past year’s drought, which resulted in burn bans. Many of the bans, including in Smith County, have been lifted.

Business was down as the winter firework selling season began earlier this month, but suppliers expect people to show up later this week to make their New Year’s purchases.

On Monday afternoon, at least several Tyler locations had not had a buyer come by, which sellers attributed to rain and it being the day after Christmas.

Sales typically open up on Dec. 20 or Dec. 21 and run through the first of the year. In the summer, sales take place in late June and early July leading up to the Fourth of July holiday.

Dominique Garcia, general manager at Best Buy Fireworks on Spur 364, said sales in general aren’t as good this year as they have been in previous years.

“The drought’s been so terrible,” she said. “We usually do well in July and New Year’s, but this year is slower (because of) the economy and drought. …

“Sales have just dropped a lot because of the drought we went through. I think the economy is picking up slowly, but it’s going to take time.”

Each year, the store likely sells about 10 cases of fireworks in the winter, she said, and she expects this year to end up at the same amount. New Year’s typically brings in about $18,000 for the store.

At Pappy’s Fireworks on Spur 364, manager Jonathan Edwards said business has been OK.

“The weather’s been messing us up, but hopefully by the end of this week, things will be dry and make up for it all,” he said Monday.

The stand usually sells most of its stock, including the popular artillery shells.

Edwards said he does not believe the drought has had an impact on winter sales, but the stand limited fireworks it sold this summer. Even so, he said summer sales, which are typically double winter sales, were not that different from previous years.

Cindy Rice, whose son owns Lone Star Fireworks off of Spur 248, said Monday that business was slow, but it always is around Christmas. She didn’t expect sales to pick up until Thursday. At the Lone Star stand, about $8,000 worth of fireworks is sold for New Year’s, and Ms. Rice hopes for the same this year.

She said the drought already affected summer sales, which did not include rockets and missiles because of area burn bans. The stand likely sold about $10,000 less in sales this summer compared to previous years.

“People were so afraid of the drought,” Ms. Rice said. But for New Year’s, she said she doesn’t think people will be as afraid to shoot fireworks because of the rain that has come to East Texas.

For those who do buy fireworks, fire and firework store officials have some safety advice.

Ms. Garcia said residents should make sure they’re in a well-open area that has received rain. That way, the ground is damp and a fire potential is minimized.

She also advised residents to make sure water is on hand.

Smith County Assistant Fire Marshal Oren Hale said all fireworks should be used by adults or with adult supervision.

Although the county is in fairly good condition because of recent rain, people also still need to be careful where they shoot fireworks, he said.

Residents should not shoot fireworks toward a house or building, and the area should be cleared of tall grass and debris, Hale said.

Jordan Health Services and CIMA Hospice Announce Business Combination

Mt. But our brain health plays a significant role in everything we do. More research is showing that there is a lot that can be done to maintain brain health and prevent cognitive decline. There is even some research that shows a lifestyle that supports a healthy brain can prevent Alzheimer’s and other dementia. Why is this important?

Upholding a standard of living that will keep one’s brain in tip-top shape is important for many reasons. Maintaining cognitive health will help one live a longer and more pleasant life. It will ensure that one is able to perform daily activities, prevent diseases, and enjoy life to its fullest. So what steps should we take to preserve a healthy brain?

First, it is important to eat a brain-healthy diet. A diet that reduces the risk of heart disease and diabetes, while maintaining a healthy weight is good for our brain. This means reducing foods high in fat and cholesterol and including more protective foods. These are things like dark skinned fruits and vegetables, foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants.

Staying physically active is also very important. Physical activity helps maintain essential blood flow to the brain. In addition to this it can help prevent heart attack, stroke, and diabetes therefore reducing the risk of dementia. Taking part in physical activity that also involves a mental activity is even more beneficial. And aerobic activity has been shown to reduce brain cell loss in the elderly.

Lastly it is imperative to stay socially active. Research shows that mental decline as we age appears to be much in part to changes in brain cell connections. Staying socially active reduces stress levels which help maintain healthy connections between brain cells.

To keep your brain active daily:
• Stay curious and involved
• Read, write, do crossword and other puzzles
• Attend lectures and plays
• Enroll in courses at your local adult education center or other community group
• Garden
• Try memory exercises

These are all positive steps that can be taken towards a lifestyle that supports a healthy brain. And be sure and ask your doctor what else you can do. If you have questions-ASK!

During the recession, Inc. 5000 companies generate $322 billion in revenue, up 50 percent over last year

Mount Vernon, TX — September 2, 2010 — Jordan Health Services is proud to announce the Company has earned a position in the 2010 Inc. 5000, Inc.’s annual exclusive ranking of the fastest growing privately owned companies in America. The list represents a comprehensive look at one of the most important segments of the economy—America’s independent-minded entrepreneurs. As an Inc. 5000 honoree, Jordan Health Services shares this title with such prominent alumni as Zappos, Clif Bar, Under Armour, Microsoft, and Timberland.

Despite the fact that most of this year’s measuring period of 2006-2009 took place during the latest recession, aggregate revenue among the companies on the list actually increased to $321.6 billion, up more than 50 percent from last year. The effects of the recession are seen, however, in the median three-year growth rate, which dropped to 96 percent from last year’s 126 percent. This year’s Inc. 5000 employ a record 1.4 million people, up from one million on last year’s list. With unemployment remaining stubbornly high, policymakers and business leaders will do well to look to the Inc. 5000 companies for fresh ideas on achieving growth and creating jobs.

Complete results of the Inc. 5000, including company profiles and an interactive database that can be sorted by industry, region, and other criteria, can be found at www.inc.com/5000.

“The leaders of the companies on this year’s Inc. 5000 have figured out how to grow their businesses during the longest recession since the Great Depression,” said Inc. president Bob LaPointe. “The 2010 Inc. 5000 showcases a particularly hardy group of entrepreneurs.”

Methodology

The 2010 Inc. 500|5000 is ranked according to percentage revenue growth when comparing 2006 to 2009. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by June 30, 2006. Additionally, they had to be based in the United States, privately held, for profit, and independent—not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies—as of December 31, 2009. (Since then, a number of companies on the list have gone public or been acquired.) The minimum revenue required for 2006 is $80,000; the minimum for 2009 is $2 million. As always, Inc. reserves the right to decline applicants for subjective reasons. The top 10 percent of companies on the list constitute the Inc. 500, now in its 29th year.

The Best Boss in Franklin County in 2010, according to the readers of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald is Mike Jordan. That distinction is quite remarkable when you claim approximately 11,000 employees, of which approximately 300 are based in Franklin County.

"It is easy to be a good boss when you have such great people working for you," Mr. Jordan said. "When you have as many long term employees as we have, everything works smoothly."

Mr. Jordan graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1965. He earned his bachelors in business administration from East Texas State University in 1970. He was in the office equipment business in the Dallas area until 1979 when he returned to Mount Vernon to help with the family business.

His parents, Joe and Jean Jordan, began Jordan Health Services in 1975 as part of a pilot program for the State of Texas to try and keep people out of nursing homes. "The economy was bad in 1975. People needed jobs, and others needed care, "Mr. Jordan said. At that time, the company provided service to five counties.

Mr. Jordan bought Mission Manor Nursing Horne from his parents in 1979. They originally opened the facility in 1969. In 2000, Mr. Jordan and his siblings, Dale and Mickey, purchased the Jordan Health Services from their parents. Mike Jordan became the sole owner of the business in 2005, and doubled the size of the company in April 2006 with the purchase of Chartwell Horne Health.

Today, Jordan Health Services provides care from Beaumont up into Oklahoma and from Fort Worth and Waco to all over East Texas. As well as providing home health care, the company operates four nursing homes and four assisted living centers.

Mr. Jordan and his wife, Janet, have been married for 39 years. They have two children. Josh and his wife, Kayce, live in Mount Vernon with their children Emerson and Kate. Julianne and her husband, Jason Evans, live in the Dallas area with their children Gillis and Jordan.

In his spare time, Mr. Jordan likes to shoot skeet and hunt and fish, but he is finding that much of that time is now being spent with his grandchildren.

Jordan Health Services Named to 2009 HomeCare Elite as a Top Home Health Care Provider

Mount Vernon, Texas, October 21, 2009 — Jordan Health Services today announced that it has been named to the 2009 HomeCare Elite™, a compilation of the top-performing home health agencies in the United States. This annual review identifies the top 25 percent of agencies and further highlights the top 100 and top 500 agencies overall. Winners are ranked by an analysis of performance measures in quality outcomes, quality improvement, and financial performance.

“The 2009 HomeCare Elite winners demonstrate a commitment to providing their patients with the best possible care while performing at the highest level,” said Nancy Buller, senior director of marketing communications at OCS HomeCare. "We congratulate Jordan on being one of the top home care agencies in the country."

Jordan’s Roy Serpa, CEO, credits a dedicated team of clinical and non-clinical employees and a focus on quality service delivery with the company’s ability to rank as one of the HomeCare Elite. He said, Jordan has been providing home care services in Texas for over 34 years. We have never been more proud of our home care team. We are especially proud that many of our locations have been named to the HomeCare Elite listing in both 2008 & 2009.”

“DecisionHealth would like to congratulate the top HomeCare Elite agencies that achieved excellent clinical and financial outcomes by providing quality care to their patients,” adds Marci Heydt, executive editor of DecisionHealth’s Home Health Line.

The 2009 HomeCare Elite is the only performance recognition of its kind in the home health industry. The 2009 HomeCare Elite is brought to the industry by OCS HomeCare, the leading provider of homecare information, and DecisionHealth, publisher of homecare’s most respected independent newsletter Home Health Line.
